Richard Moryl was an American composer and conductor who was born on August 6, 1932, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Moryl began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and later went on to study at the Juilliard School. Moryl's early compositions were influenced by the works of Stravinsky, Bartok, and Schoenberg. He was particularly interested in the use of serialism and atonality in music. In 1955, Moryl won the BMI Student Composer Award for his String Quartet No. 1. This award helped to launch his career as a composer. In the 1960s, Moryl began to experiment with electronic music. He was one of the first composers to use the Moog synthesizer in his compositions. His electronic works were often accompanied by live performers, creating a unique blend of electronic and acoustic sounds. Moryl's electronic works include "Electronic Music for the Ballet," "Electronic Music for the Theater," and "Electronic Music for the Dance." Moryl was also a conductor and worked with several orchestras throughout his career. He was the music director of the New York City Ballet from 1972 to 1976 and conducted the American Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. One of Moryl's most famous works is his opera "The Emperor's New Clothes," which premiered in 1977. The opera is based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and tells the story of an emperor who is tricked into believing that he is wearing a magnificent suit of clothes when, in fact, he is naked. The opera was well-received by critics and audiences alike and has been performed by several opera companies around the world. Moryl's other notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which premiered in 1962, and his Piano Concerto, which premiered in 1968. His music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as its incorporation of electronic and acoustic sounds. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Moryl was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Iowa and the University of Texas at Austin. Moryl passed away on December 18, 2019, at the age of 87. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential music that continues to inspire composers and musicians today.
