Miriam Stockley is a British classical music artist who has made a name for herself in the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and composer. She was born on April 15, 1962, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer, so it was only natural that Miriam would follow in their footsteps. Miriam's love for music started at a young age, and she began singing in choirs and performing in musicals. She attended the University of Cape Town, where she studied music and drama. After completing her studies, she moved to London to pursue a career in music. In the early 1980s, Miriam joined the band The Communards as a backing vocalist. The band was led by Jimmy Somerville, and they had several hits, including "Don't Leave Me This Way" and "Never Can Say Goodbye." Miriam's powerful voice and stage presence quickly caught the attention of the music industry, and she soon became a sought-after session singer. Miriam's big break came in 1991 when she was asked to sing on the soundtrack for the movie "The Lion King." She provided the vocals for the opening song "Circle of Life" and the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." The soundtrack went on to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children. After the success of "The Lion King," Miriam continued to work as a session singer and also began to focus on her solo career. In 1994, she released her debut album "Miriam," which featured a mix of classical and pop songs. The album received critical acclaim and showcased Miriam's versatility as a singer. In 1996, Miriam was asked to join the classical crossover group Adiemus, which was led by composer Karl Jenkins. Adiemus was known for their unique blend of classical and world music, and Miriam's powerful vocals were a perfect fit for the group. She recorded several albums with Adiemus, including "Adiemus II: Cantata Mundi" and "Adiemus III: Dances of Time." Miriam's work with Adiemus led to several high-profile performances, including a performance at the opening ceremony of the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She also performed at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. In addition to her work with Adiemus, Miriam has also collaborated with several other artists and composers. She has worked with composer Hans Zimmer on several movie soundtracks, including "Gladiator," "The Prince of Egypt," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." She has also worked with composer John Barry on the soundtrack for the movie "The Specialist." Miriam's talent as a composer has also been recognized, and she has composed music for several movies and television shows. She composed the score for the movie "The Little Vampire" and the television series "The 10th Kingdom." She has also composed music for several commercials, including a commercial for Coca-Cola. Throughout her career, Miriam has received several awards and nominations for her work. In 1995, she was nominated for a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist. In 1999, she won a Classical BRIT Award for Best Crossover Album for "Adiemus III: Dances of Time." She has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for her work on movie soundtracks.
