He began his musical education at the age of six, studying the harp under the tutelage of Denis Hempson, a renowned harpist of the time. Thomas was a prodigious talent, and by the age of ten, he had already given his first public performance. In 1793, Thomas was introduced to the composer and musicologist Edward Bunting, who recognized his talent and took him under his wing. Bunting was a leading authority on Irish music, and he introduced Thomas to the rich tradition of Irish folk music. Thomas was fascinated by the music and began to incorporate it into his own compositions. In 1801, Thomas moved to London to pursue his musical career. He quickly established himself as a leading harpist and composer, and his performances were highly acclaimed. In 1808, Thomas was appointed as the official harpist to the Prince of Wales, and he held this position until 1810.
