He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Bielawa began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the clarinet and saxophone. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and went on to study composition at the Manhattan School of Music. Bielawa's early compositions were influenced by the works of Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg. He was also interested in jazz and incorporated elements of it into his music. In 1954, Bielawa won the BMI Student Composer Award for his String Quartet No. 1. This recognition helped launch his career as a composer. Throughout his career, Bielawa composed works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments. He was particularly interested in vocal music and wrote several operas and choral works. One of his most famous works is the opera "The Snow Queen," which was commissioned by the San Francisco Opera and premiered in 1980. The opera is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and features a libretto by the composer. Bielawa's music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms and harmonies. He often used unconventional scales and modes, which gave his music a unique sound. His compositions were also known for their emotional depth and expressive melodies. In addition to his work as a composer, Bielawa was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He was also a founding member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, an ensemble dedicated to performing new music. Bielawa's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with several awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, which allowed him to travel to Europe and study the works of contemporary composers. He was also a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Music Award and the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award. Herbert Bielawa passed away on December 4, 1994, at the age of 64. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world.More....
