The Fry Street Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1997 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Fry Street Quartet were Rebecca McFaul on violin, Blanka Bednarz on violin, Russell Fallstad on viola, and Anne Francis Bayless on cello. All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world, including the Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. From the very beginning, the Fry Street Quartet was committed to exploring the full range of the chamber music repertoire, from the classics of Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary works by living composers. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and their ability to bring fresh interpretations to even the most familiar pieces. One of the highlights of the Fry Street Quartet's early career was their residency at Utah State University, where they served as the university's quartet-in-residence from 2002 to 2018. During this time, they not only performed regularly on campus but also worked closely with students, offering masterclasses and coaching sessions to help develop the next generation of chamber musicians. Over the years, the Fry Street Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Wigmore Hall in London. They have also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Simone Dinnerstein and cellist Zuill Bailey. One of the most significant achievements of the Fry Street Quartet was their win at the 2007 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions for chamber music in the world. The quartet's performance was praised for its "impeccable ensemble playing, interpretive range, and sheer vitality." In addition to their success at the Naumburg Competition, the Fry Street Quartet has also been recognized with numerous other awards and honors. They were the recipients of the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2010 and were named the Best Chamber Ensemble by the Utah Best of State Awards in 2015 and 2016. Throughout their career, the Fry Street Quartet has remained committed to pushing the boundaries of chamber music and exploring new ways to connect with audiences. They have collaborated with artists from other disciplines, including dancers and visual artists, and have even experimented with incorporating improvisation into their performances. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Fry Street Quartet has remained a vital force in the world of chamber music. Today, the quartet is made up of violinists Robert Waters and William Fedkenheuer, violist Bradley Ottesen, and cellist Anne Francis Bayless, one of the founding members. They continue to perform regularly, both in the United States and abroad, and are known for their dynamic and engaging performances that bring new life to the chamber music repertoire.
