Alia Musica is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The group was formed by a group of musicians who shared a passion for contemporary classical music and wanted to create a platform for the performance and promotion of this genre. The founding members of Alia Musica were conductor and composer Federico Garcia-De Castro, pianist and composer Eric Moe, and violinist and composer Roger Zahab. These three musicians were joined by a number of other talented performers, including cellist Paula Tuttle, flutist Lindsey Goodman, and percussionist Scott Christian. From the beginning, Alia Musica was committed to exploring the boundaries of contemporary classical music and pushing the limits of what was possible in terms of composition and performance. The group's repertoire included works by some of the most innovative and experimental composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Gyorgy Ligeti. Over the years, Alia Musica has become known for its innovative and daring performances, which often incorporate elements of improvisation and experimentation. The group has also collaborated with a number of other artists and organizations, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. One of the highlights of Alia Musica's career was its performance of Morton Feldman's epic six-hour-long work "For Philip Guston" in 2010. This performance, which took place at the Andy Warhol Museum, was a major undertaking for the group, but it was widely praised for its intensity and commitment. Another notable performance by Alia Musica was its collaboration with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2014. The group performed a program of contemporary works by composers such as John Adams, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, which was met with critical acclaim. In addition to its performances, Alia Musica has also been recognized for its contributions to the world of contemporary classical music. The group has received numerous awards and grants, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a residency at the MacDowell Colony. Today, Alia Musica continues to be a leading force in the world of contemporary classical music. The group's commitment to innovation and experimentation has earned it a dedicated following of fans and supporters, and its performances continue to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.
