The ensemble was founded in 1996 by Jurgen De bruyn, a Belgian musician and composer, and Els Van Laethem, a Belgian singer and musicologist. The ensemble's name, Zefiro Torna, is derived from a madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi, which means "Zephyr, return". The ensemble's main members include Jurgen De bruyn, who plays the lute, theorbo, and guitar, and Els Van Laethem, who is a soprano and plays the recorder and harp. Other members of the ensemble include Liam Fennelly, who plays the fiddle and viola da gamba, and Vincent Noiret, who plays the double bass. The ensemble also collaborates with other musicians and artists, including actors, dancers, and visual artists.
