John Redford was a prominent English composer of the Renaissance period, born in the year 1500 in the town of Windsor, Berkshire. He was the son of Richard Redford, a member of the Chapel Royal, and his mother's name is unknown. John Redford's early life is not well documented, but it is believed that he received his musical education at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, where he was a chorister. Redford's musical talent was recognized early on, and he was appointed as the Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal in 1530. This position involved overseeing the musical education of the young boys who sang in the Chapel Royal, as well as composing music for them to perform. Redford held this position until 1547, when he was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. During his time at St. Paul's, Redford composed a significant amount of music, including anthems, motets, and hymns. His compositions were highly regarded, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. Redford's music was characterized by its clear and simple melodies, which were often accompanied by rich harmonies. One of Redford's most famous works is his setting of the hymn "Rejoice in the Lord Alway," which is also known as the "Bell Anthem." This piece is notable for its use of handbells, which were played by the choir during the performance. The "Bell Anthem" remains a popular piece of music to this day and is often performed at weddings and other special occasions. Another notable work by Redford is his setting of the Magnificat, which is a hymn of praise to the Virgin Mary. This piece is characterized by its soaring melodies and rich harmonies, and it remains a popular piece of music in the choral repertoire.
