Duo Koroliov is a classical music duo consisting of pianist Evgeni Koroliov and his wife, cellist Ljupka Hadzi-Georgieva. The duo has gained international recognition for their exceptional performances and interpretations of classical music. Evgeni Koroliov was born on May 1, 1949, in Moscow, Russia. He began playing the piano at the age of five and went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of Lev Naumov. Koroliov quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was awarded first prize at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1972. After winning the competition, Koroliov began performing extensively throughout Europe and the United States. He has collaborated with many renowned conductors and orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his successful career as a solo pianist, Koroliov has also established himself as a respected chamber musician. He has performed with many notable musicians, including violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Heinrich Schiff. Ljupka Hadzi-Georgieva was born on December 22, 1969, in Skopje, Macedonia. She began playing the cello at the age of seven and went on to study at the Music Academy in Skopje. Hadzi-Georgieva continued her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, where she met Koroliov. The two musicians fell in love and were married in 1993. They began performing together as Duo Koroliov and quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicality and chemistry. Duo Koroliov has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. They have appeared at many prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. The duo has also recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including their debut album, featuring works by Beethoven and Brahms, and their album of Bach's Goldberg Variations, which was praised for its "clarity, precision, and emotional depth." In addition to their successful career as performers, Duo Koroliov has also been recognized for their contributions to the world of classical music. They were awarded the Echo Klassik Award in 2005 for their album of Bach's Goldberg Variations and were named Honorary Citizens of the City of Hannover in 2014.
