The University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1938. It is based in Louisville, Kentucky, and is composed of students, faculty, and community members. The orchestra is known for its high-quality performances and has won numerous awards and accolades over the years. The University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra was founded by Dr. Edgar L. Morsman, who served as the orchestra's conductor for over 30 years. Dr. Morsman was a renowned conductor and music educator who had previously served as the conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. He believed that a university orchestra could provide students with valuable performance experience and help to promote classical music in the community. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of successful performances and collaborations with other local music organizations. In 1940, the orchestra performed with the Louisville Civic Chorus in a performance of Handel's Messiah. This collaboration would become an annual tradition, and the orchestra and chorus would go on to perform together for over 50 years. Over the years, the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Robert Whitney, Lawrence Leighton Smith, and Kimcherie Lloyd. These conductors have helped to shape the orchestra's sound and reputation, and have led the orchestra to numerous successes. One of the orchestra's most notable performances came in 1963, when it performed at the White House for President John F. Kennedy. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of a series of concerts that were held at the White House to promote American culture. The performance was a great success, and helped to raise the orchestra's profile both locally and nationally. In addition to its performances in the United States, the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra has also toured internationally. In 1972, the orchestra traveled to Europe, where it performed in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The tour was a great success, and helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as a world-class ensemble. Over the years, the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra has won numerous awards and accolades. In 1983, the orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that perform contemporary music. The orchestra has also been recognized by the Kentucky Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts for its contributions to the arts in Kentucky. Today, the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra continues to be a vital part of the Louisville music scene. The orchestra performs a wide range of repertoire, from classical masterpieces to contemporary works. It also collaborates with other local music organizations, including the Louisville Ballet and the Kentucky Opera. The orchestra is composed of talented musicians from the University of Louisville School of Music, as well as community members who audition for a place in the ensemble. The orchestra's members come from a wide range of backgrounds and have diverse musical interests, but they all share a passion for classical music and a commitment to excellence. In recent years, the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra has continued to build on its legacy of excellence. The orchestra has performed with world-renowned soloists, including pianist Lang Lang and violinist Joshua Bell.
