David Dickau is a renowned American composer of choral music, known for his unique style that blends traditional and contemporary elements. Born on October 27, 1953, in Mason City, Iowa, Dickau grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a choir director, which exposed him to the world of choral music from an early age. Dickau attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1975. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree in choral conducting at the University of Minnesota, where he studied under the renowned conductor and composer, Paul Christiansen. During his time at the University of Minnesota, Dickau also studied composition with Dominick Argento and Paul Fetler. After completing his studies, Dickau began his career as a choral conductor and music educator. He taught at several schools and universities, including the University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, and Minnesota State University, Mankato. He also served as the director of music at several churches, including the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Throughout his career, Dickau has composed over 100 works for choir, ranging from sacred to secular, and from simple to complex. His compositions have been performed by choirs around the world, including the St. Olaf Choir, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Dale Warland Singers. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the ASCAP Standard Award for Composers of Serious Music. One of Dickau's most famous works is his setting of the traditional Irish blessing, "May the Road Rise to Meet You." This piece has become a staple in the choral repertoire and has been performed by countless choirs around the world. Another notable work by Dickau is his setting of the poem "If Music Be the Food of Love" by Henry Heveningham.
