Avner Dorman is a contemporary classical music composer who was born on April 14, 1975, in Israel. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Dorman began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the drums and percussion instruments. He attended the Tel Aviv University, where he studied composition with renowned composer Mark Kopytman. Dorman's early works were influenced by his Israeli heritage and the Middle Eastern music he grew up listening to. His compositions often incorporate elements of Israeli folk music, Arabic music, and Jewish liturgical music. In 2001, Dorman moved to the United States to pursue a doctorate in composition at the Juilliard School in New York City. Dorman's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Yefim Bronfman. One of Dorman's most famous works is his percussion concerto, "Frozen in Time," which was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 2007. The piece features a solo percussionist who plays a variety of instruments, including marimba, vibraphone, and drums. The concerto is known for its complex rhythms and intricate percussion writing. Another notable work by Dorman is his Symphony No. 2, "Voyage," which was commissioned by the Seattle Symphony and premiered in 2010. The symphony is inspired by the idea of a journey, with each movement representing a different stage of the voyage. The piece features a large orchestra and incorporates elements of Middle Eastern music, including a solo oud (a traditional Middle Eastern stringed instrument). Dorman's music has been praised for its originality and unique blend of musical styles. He has won numerous awards for his compositions, including the prestigious Azrieli Prize for Jewish Music in 2018. In addition to his work as a composer, Dorman is also a professor of composition at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.
