Artist Info
Ida Bryhn was a Norwegian classical music artist who was born on August 22, 1890, in Oslo, Norway. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father, Johan Bryhn, was a well-known violinist and conductor, and her mother, Marie Bryhn, was a pianist. Ida showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Ida's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began studying the piano with her mother and later with several prominent Norwegian pianists, including Agathe Backer-Grøndahl and Erika Nissen. She also studied composition with Catharinus Elling and theory with Gustav Lange. In 1908, at the age of 18, Ida made her debut as a pianist in Oslo. She received critical acclaim for her performance and was soon invited to perform in other cities in Norway. In 1910, she traveled to Berlin to study with the renowned pianist and teacher, Ferruccio Busoni. She spent two years studying with Busoni and also performed in several concerts in Germany and Austria. Ida's career continued to flourish in the years that followed. She performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and was known for her virtuosic technique and expressive playing. She also became a respected teacher and taught at several music schools, including the Oslo Conservatory of Music. One of the highlights of Ida's career was her performance of Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1928. The performance was a great success and cemented Ida's reputation as one of the leading pianists of her time. Ida also received several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1930, she was awarded the King's Medal of Merit by the Norwegian government for her contributions to Norwegian music. She was also made a Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 1950. Ida continued to perform and teach until her death on December 23, 1967, in Oslo, Norway. She left behind a legacy as one of Norway's greatest pianists and a respected teacher and mentor to many young musicians.More....
