The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1900 and is one of the oldest orchestras in the United States. The orchestra was established by a group of local musicians who wanted to bring classical music to the people of Hawaii. The first concert was held on December 8, 1900, and was conducted by Henri Berger, a German musician who had been hired by King Kalakaua to lead the Royal Hawaiian Band. Over the years, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra has had many talented musicians and conductors. Some of the most notable conductors include Fritz Hart, who led the orchestra from 1927 to 1930, and Samuel Krachmalnick, who served as the music director from 1959 to 1967. Other notable conductors include Robert LaMarchina, who led the orchestra from 1979 to 1983, and JoAnn Falletta, who served as the music director from 1991 to 1999. The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra has also had many talented musicians over the years. Some of the most notable include violinist Joseph Silverstein, who served as the concertmaster from 1959 to 1962, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who performed with the orchestra in 1981. Other notable musicians include pianist Van Cliburn, who performed with the orchestra in 1961, and violinist Itzhak Perlman, who performed with the orchestra in 1983. The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra has performed many notable works over the years. Some of the most notable performances include the world premiere of Alan Hovhaness' Symphony No. 2, "Mysterious Mountain," in 1955, and the world premiere of Michael Colgrass' "As Quiet As" in 1985. The orchestra has also performed many works by local composers, including "Hawaiian War Chant" by Johnny Noble and "Aloha Oe" by Queen Liliuokalani. The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra has received many awards and accolades over the years. In 2004, the orchestra was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces grant, which recognized the orchestra's contributions to American music. The orchestra has also been recognized by the Hawaii State Legislature for its contributions to the cultural life of Hawaii. Despite its many accomplishments, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra has faced many challenges over the years. In 2009, the orchestra filed for bankruptcy and was forced to cancel its entire season. The orchestra was eventually reorganized as the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, which continues to perform today. Despite its challenges, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra remains an important part of Hawaii's cultural heritage. The orchestra has brought classical music to generations of Hawaiians and has helped to foster a love of music in the community. With its talented musicians and dedicated supporters, the orchestra is sure to continue to thrive for many years to come.
