Dilermando Reis was a Brazilian classical guitarist and composer who was born on September 22, 1916, in Guaratinguetá, São Paulo, Brazil. He was the son of a musician and began playing the guitar at a young age. His father, a violinist, taught him the basics of music theory and guitar technique. Reis quickly became a prodigy and began performing in public at the age of 10. Reis' family moved to São Paulo when he was a teenager, and he began studying with the renowned guitarist and composer Agustin Barrios. Barrios was impressed with Reis' talent and took him under his wing, teaching him advanced techniques and introducing him to the world of classical guitar music. Reis' early compositions were heavily influenced by Barrios' style, which blended classical and folk music from South America. Reis' first major composition, "Se Ela Perguntar" ("If She Asks"), was written when he was just 19 years old and became an instant hit in Brazil. The song was later recorded by many other artists and became a classic of Brazilian popular music. In the 1940s, Reis began to focus more on classical guitar music and began composing pieces that showcased his virtuosity and technical skill. His compositions were often inspired by Brazilian folk music, but he also drew on classical music from Europe and other parts of the world. One of Reis' most famous compositions is "Abismo de Rosas" ("Abyss of Roses"), which he wrote in 1941. The piece is a beautiful and haunting melody that has become a classic of Brazilian guitar music. It is often played at weddings and other special occasions in Brazil. Reis continued to compose and perform throughout his life, but he struggled with health problems in his later years. He died on January 2, 1977, at the age of 60. Despite his relatively short life, Reis left a lasting legacy in the world of classical guitar music. His compositions are still played and admired by guitarists around the world, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary Brazilian musicians. In addition to "Abismo de Rosas," some of Reis' other notable compositions include "Magoado" ("Hurt"), "Noite de Lua" ("Moonlit Night"), and "Xodó da Baiana" ("Sweetheart of Bahia"). His music is characterized by its beautiful melodies, intricate harmonies, and technical virtuosity. Reis' legacy has been celebrated in Brazil and around the world. In 2016, on the 100th anniversary of his birth, a series of concerts and events were held in his honor. His music continues to inspire and delight audiences, and his contributions to the world of classical guitar music will never be forgotten.
