Abraham Cupeiro was a Spanish composer and pianist who lived from 1907 to 1995. He was born in the city of Oviedo, in the northern region of Asturias, Spain. Cupeiro showed an early interest in music, and began studying piano at the age of six. He later studied composition with the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Cupeiro's early works were influenced by the Spanish nationalist style of music, which was popular in the early 20th century. His first major composition was a piano concerto, which he wrote in 1930. The concerto was well-received, and helped establish Cupeiro as a promising young composer. In the 1930s, Cupeiro became involved in the Spanish Civil War, fighting on the side of the Republicans. He was captured by Franco's forces in 1937, and spent the rest of the war in a prison camp. During this time, he continued to compose music, often using scraps of paper and other materials he could find. After the war, Cupeiro returned to Oviedo and resumed his career as a composer and pianist. He continued to write music in the Spanish nationalist style, but also began to incorporate elements of modernism and atonality into his work. His music became more complex and experimental, and he began to gain a reputation as one of Spain's leading composers. Cupeiro's most famous work is his Piano Concerto No. 2, which he wrote in 1952. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, and features complex rhythms and harmonies. It has been performed by many of the world's leading pianists, including Alicia de Larrocha and Martha Argerich. In addition to his piano concertos, Cupeiro wrote a number of other works for piano, including sonatas, preludes, and études. He also wrote chamber music, orchestral works, and vocal music. His music is characterized by its lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and harmonic complexity. Cupeiro was a prolific composer, and continued to write music well into his old age. He was also a respected teacher, and taught composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Oviedo for many years. He was widely regarded as one of Spain's greatest composers, and his music continues to be performed and recorded today.
