The Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years. The ensemble was founded in 1968 by Dr. Keith Bearden, who served as its first conductor. Since then, the ensemble has grown in size and reputation, becoming one of the most respected wind ensembles in the United States. The ensemble is open to all students, regardless of their major, and auditions are held each semester to determine membership. The ensemble is led by Dr. Sarah McKoin, who has been the director of bands at Texas Tech University since 2013. Over the years, the Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble has performed at numerous prestigious events and venues. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was at the 2015 College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) National Conference, where they were one of only six ensembles selected to perform. The ensemble has also performed at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention, the Midwest Clinic, and the American Bandmasters Association (ABA) Convention. In addition to its impressive performance schedule, the Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2015, the ensemble was named a finalist for the American Prize in Band/Wind Ensemble Performance, and in 2016, they were awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the world of wind bands. The Sudler Silver Scroll is awarded to only a handful of ensembles each year, and is given in recognition of excellence in the field of wind band music. The Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble is known for its diverse repertoire, which includes both traditional and contemporary works. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered numerous new works, and has collaborated with many renowned composers and conductors. Some of the ensemble's most notable collaborations include performances with John Mackey, Frank Ticheli, and Michael Colgrass.
