Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika is a classical music ensemble that specializes in Russian folk music. The ensemble was founded in 1968 by the Russian musician and conductor, Andrei Alexandrovich Krylov. Krylov was born in Moscow in 1931 and began playing the balalaika, a traditional Russian stringed instrument, at a young age. He went on to study music at the Moscow Conservatory and became a renowned performer and conductor of Russian folk music. Krylov founded Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika with the goal of preserving and promoting traditional Russian folk music. The ensemble consists of musicians who play a variety of traditional Russian instruments, including the balalaika, domra, and bayan. The ensemble's name, Tschaika, means "seagull" in Russian and is a reference to the bird's ability to soar and glide gracefully through the air. The ensemble's main members have changed over the years, but Krylov remained the conductor and artistic director until his death in 2011. Other notable members of the ensemble have included Vladimir Andreevich Krylov, Andrei Krylov's son, who played the balalaika and served as the ensemble's concertmaster, and Alexander Tsygankov, who played the bayan. Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika has performed all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The ensemble has also performed for heads of state, including Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Emperor Akihito of Japan. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The ensemble performed at the opening ceremony, playing traditional Russian folk music to a global audience. The performance was widely praised and helped to raise the profile of Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika. In addition to its performances, Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika has also won numerous awards and accolades. The ensemble has won several international competitions, including the International Folk Music Festival in Poland and the International Festival of Folk Music in France. The ensemble has also been awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Russian artist. Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika's recordings have also been well-received. The ensemble has released several albums, including "Russian Folk Music" and "Balalaika Favorites," which have been praised for their virtuosity and authenticity. The ensemble's recordings have been featured on radio and television programs around the world. Despite the passing of its founder and longtime conductor, Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika continues to perform and promote traditional Russian folk music. The ensemble's current conductor is Vladimir Andreevich Krylov, Andrei Krylov's son, who has continued his father's legacy of excellence and dedication to preserving Russian folk music. Balalaika-Ensemble Tschaika remains one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the world of classical music.
