Šlais began his professional career as a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played for over 20 years. During his time with the orchestra, he performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. In addition to his work with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Šlais was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with some of the most renowned orchestras and ensembles in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many famous conductors, such as Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Seiji Ozawa. Šlais was known for his exceptional performances of the trumpet repertoire, including works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and Hummel. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered many new works for the trumpet. He was particularly interested in the music of his fellow Czech composers, such as Bohuslav Martinů and Jiří Pauer. Throughout his career, Šlais received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the Czech government in 1970 and was later named a National Artist in 1985. He was also awarded the Medal of Merit by the Czech Republic in 1995 and the Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in 2001. One of the highlights of Šlais's career was his performance at the 1968 Prague Spring International Music Festival. He played the trumpet solo in Martinů's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, which was a tribute to the recently deceased composer. The performance was a great success, and Šlais received a standing ovation from the audience. Another notable performance by Šlais was his rendition of Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the most celebrated recordings of the concerto.
