Adina Dumitrescu was a Romanian classical music composer born on December 22, 1951, in Bucharest, Romania. She was the daughter of two musicians, her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Her parents' love for music was passed down to Adina, who began playing the piano at the age of five. She showed a natural talent for music, and her parents recognized her potential early on. Adina's parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music, and she began studying at the National University of Music in Bucharest. She studied composition with Aurel Stroe and Tiberiu Olah, and piano with Florica Musicescu. Adina was a dedicated student, and her hard work paid off when she graduated with honors in 1975. After graduation, Adina began working as a composer and pianist. She composed music for films, theater, and television, and her works were well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1980, she won the George Enescu Prize for her composition "Concerto for Orchestra." Adina's music was characterized by its emotional depth and complexity. She drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including Romanian folk music, classical music, and contemporary music. Her compositions were often experimental, incorporating unconventional techniques and sounds. One of Adina's most famous works is "The Book of Angels," a cycle of songs for soprano and piano based on the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. The cycle was composed in 1985 and premiered in Bucharest the same year. The work was praised for its haunting melodies and evocative lyrics, and it remains one of Adina's most popular compositions. Another notable work by Adina is "The Garden of Dreams," a ballet composed in 1990. The ballet tells the story of a young girl who falls asleep in a garden and dreams of a magical world. The music is characterized by its dreamlike quality, with ethereal melodies and shimmering textures. Adina's music was performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta. She also collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including the pianist Radu Lupu and the conductor Cristian Mandeal. In addition to her work as a composer, Adina was also a respected music educator. She taught composition at the National University of Music in Bucharest, and her students included a number of successful composers and performers. Tragically, Adina's life was cut short when she died of cancer on December 30, 1997, at the age of 46. Her death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but her legacy lives on through her music. Adina's compositions continue to be performed and recorded, and her influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary composers. In conclusion, Adina Dumitrescu was a talented and innovative composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
