William Marshall Hutchison was an American composer and pianist who was born on December 17, 1879, in New York City. He was the son of William Hutchison, a prominent lawyer, and Mary Marshall Hutchison, a talented pianist. From a young age, Hutchison showed a great interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Hutchison's parents recognized his musical talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He attended the New York College of Music, where he studied piano with Rafael Joseffy and composition with Percy Goetschius. After completing his studies, Hutchison began performing as a pianist and composer in New York City. In 1905, Hutchison married Florence L. Smith, and the couple had two children. Hutchison continued to perform as a pianist and compose music throughout his life, and he became known for his innovative and experimental approach to composition. One of Hutchison's most significant works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1913. The concerto is a complex and challenging piece that showcases Hutchison's virtuosic piano playing and his unique compositional style. The concerto was premiered in New York City in 1914, and it received critical acclaim for its originality and technical brilliance. Hutchison's other notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1917, and his Piano Sonata No. 2, which he composed in 1922. Both works demonstrate Hutchison's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create complex and intricate musical structures. In addition to his work as a composer, Hutchison was also a respected music educator. He taught at the New York College of Music and the Juilliard School, where he influenced a generation of young musicians. Hutchison's music was often compared to that of other modernist composers of his time, such as Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg. However, Hutchison's music was unique in its use of jazz and blues elements, which he incorporated into his classical compositions. Hutchison continued to compose music and perform as a pianist throughout his life, and he remained an influential figure in the world of classical music until his death in 1944. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and studied by musicians and music lovers around the world.
