Michael Unterman is a renowned cellist and classical music artist who has made a significant impact on the music industry. Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1985, Unterman began his musical journey at a young age. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional cellist and his mother a pianist. This early exposure to music sparked his interest in the cello, and he began taking lessons at the age of six. Unterman's talent and dedication to the cello quickly became apparent, and he began to excel in his studies. He attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied under the guidance of renowned cellist Georg Pedersen. During his time at the conservatory, Unterman won numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award for Outstanding String Player. After completing his studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Unterman continued his education at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, he studied with renowned cellist Joel Krosnick and earned a Master of Music degree. During his time at Juilliard, Unterman was awarded the prestigious Irene Diamond Graduate Fellowship, which provided him with the opportunity to study and perform with some of the world's most renowned musicians. Unterman's talent and dedication to the cello have led to numerous highlights in his career. He has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a soloist, Unterman is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Australian String Quartet, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He is also a founding member of the acclaimed cello quartet, The Four Cellos. Unterman's dedication to music has also led to numerous awards and accolades. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Australia Council for the Arts Music Fellowship, which provided him with the opportunity to further his studies and perform around the world. He has also been awarded the Freedman Fellowship, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant, and the Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart Grant. Unterman's dedication to music extends beyond his performances. He is also a passionate educator and has taught at some of the world's leading music institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He is currently a faculty member at the University of Melbourne, where he teaches cello and chamber music. In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Unterman is also a passionate advocate for new music. He has commissioned and premiered numerous works by some of the world's leading composers, including Brett Dean, Nico Muhly, and Missy Mazzoli. He is also a founding member of the contemporary music ensemble, Ensemble Offspring.
