Michael Kannen is a renowned cellist and chamber musician who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born in 1951 in New York City, Kannen grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Kannen began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the most prominent cellists of his time, including Leonard Rose, Harvey Shapiro, and Bernard Greenhouse. Kannen also attended the Juilliard School, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree. After completing his studies, Kannen embarked on a successful career as a chamber musician. He has performed with some of the most prestigious ensembles in the world, including the Tokyo String Quartet, the Guarneri Quartet, and the Emerson Quartet. Kannen has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Menahem Pressler, violinist Pinchas Zukerman, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of Kannen's most significant achievements was his tenure as the cellist of the Peabody Trio. The Peabody Trio was formed in 1986 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest chamber ensembles in the world. Kannen was a member of the trio for over 20 years, during which time they performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. The trio also recorded numerous albums, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Dvorak. In addition to his work as a chamber musician, Kannen has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also been a frequent guest artist at many music festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. Kannen's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1981, he was awarded the prestigious Naumburg Award, which is given annually to outstanding young musicians. He has also been a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Award. Kannen is also a respected teacher and has taught at many prestigious institutions, including the Peabody Conservatory, the New England Conservatory, and the Juilliard School. He is currently a professor of cello at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
