Ejnar Kanding was a Danish composer and sound artist who was born on August 14, 1965, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a composer and conductor. Kanding started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin and the guitar. He was interested in music from an early age and was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, including classical, jazz, and rock. Kanding studied music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received a degree in composition in 1993. During his studies, he was influenced by the works of composers such as György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Morton Feldman. He also studied electronic music and sound art, which would later become an important part of his work. After completing his studies, Kanding began working as a freelance composer and sound artist. He composed music for a variety of media, including film, theater, and dance. He also created sound installations and performed live electronic music. Kanding's music is characterized by its experimental and innovative nature. He often combines acoustic instruments with electronic sounds and uses unconventional techniques to create new sounds. His compositions are often complex and challenging, but also beautiful and evocative. One of Kanding's most notable works is his opera "The Last Hour," which was premiered in 2002. The opera is based on the story of the last hour of the life of the philosopher Socrates, and explores themes of mortality, truth, and the nature of existence. The music is a combination of acoustic instruments and electronic sounds, and features a libretto by the Danish poet Peter Laugesen. Another important work by Kanding is his "Soundscapes" series, which consists of a collection of sound installations that explore the relationship between sound and space. The installations are created using a variety of techniques, including field recordings, live electronics, and acoustic instruments. They are designed to be experienced in specific locations, and often incorporate the sounds of the surrounding environment. Kanding's music has been performed and exhibited in many countries around the world, including Denmark, Germany, France, and the United States. He has received numerous awards and grants for his work, including the Danish Arts Foundation's three-year working grant in 2005. In addition to his work as a composer and sound artist, Kanding was also a teacher and mentor to many young musicians and artists. He taught composition and electronic music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Funen Art Academy, and was a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. Sadly, Ejnar Kanding passed away on December 20, 2020, at the age of 55. He will be remembered as a pioneering composer and sound artist who pushed the boundaries of music and sound, and inspired generations of musicians and artists.
