Ritva-Liisa Korhonen is a Finnish classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist, conductor, and educator. Born on May 22, 1958, in Helsinki, Finland, Korhonen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. She went on to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. Korhonen's talent as a pianist was recognized early on, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of Finland's most promising young musicians. In 1981, she won first prize in the Maj Lind Piano Competition, which led to a series of high-profile performances throughout Europe and the United States. She also won the Nordic Piano Competition in 1982 and the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy, in 1983. Korhonen's success as a pianist led to opportunities to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with many of the world's most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Sir Simon Rattle, and Claudio Abbado. She has taught at the Sibelius Academy since 1985 and has also been a visiting professor at many other institutions, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. She has also served as a jury member for many international music competitions, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition. Throughout her career, Korhonen has received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1993, she was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, one of Finland's highest honors for cultural achievement. She has also been awarded the Order of the Lion of Finland and the Order of the White Rose of Finland. In 2018, she was awarded the Sibelius Medal, which is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to Finnish music. Korhonen's recordings have also received critical acclaim. She has recorded for many major labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, and Ondine. Her recordings of the music of Jean Sibelius have been particularly well-received, and she has been praised for her sensitive and nuanced interpretations of his works. In recent years, Korhonen has continued to perform and record, and she remains an important figure in the world of classical music.
