Jess Trio Wien is a classical music ensemble that was founded in Vienna, Austria in 1997. The trio consists of violinist Birgit Erz, cellist Matthias Bartolomey, and pianist Stefan Mendl. The ensemble's name is derived from the first letters of the members' first names. Birgit Erz was born in Vienna and began playing the violin at the age of six. She studied at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts and has won numerous awards, including the first prize at the International Violin Competition in Kloster Schöntal, Germany. Matthias Bartolomey was also born in Vienna and began playing the cello at the age of seven. He studied at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts and has won several awards, including the first prize at the International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria. Stefan Mendl was born in Munich, Germany and began playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and has won several awards, including the first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. The trio's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and Alfred Schnittke. They have performed in major concert halls around the world, including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. One of the highlights of the trio's career was their performance at the Salzburg Festival in 2003. They performed Beethoven's Triple Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of conductor Zubin Mehta. The performance was highly acclaimed and led to further invitations to perform at major festivals and concert halls around the world. In 2006, the trio released their debut album, featuring works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for the International Classical Music Awards. They have since released several more albums, including a recording of works by contemporary composer Alfred Schnittke. In addition to their performances as a trio, the members of Jess Trio Wien are also active as soloists and chamber musicians. They have collaborated with many renowned musicians, including violinist Julian Rachlin and cellist Mischa Maisky.
