Philip Hii is a renowned classical guitarist, composer, and educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in Malaysia in 1959, Hii began his musical journey at a young age, showing a keen interest in the guitar. He started taking guitar lessons at the age of 10 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Hii's early musical education was influenced by his father, who was a music lover and encouraged his son to pursue his passion for the guitar. Hii's father introduced him to the works of classical guitarists such as Andres Segovia and Julian Bream, which inspired him to study classical guitar. In 1977, Hii moved to the United States to study music at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He studied under the tutelage of renowned guitarists such as Pepe Romero and Christopher Parkening, who helped him refine his technique and develop his musical style. During his time at USC, Hii won several awards and accolades for his guitar playing, including the prestigious Andres Segovia Award. He also performed in numerous concerts and recitals, showcasing his exceptional talent and musical prowess. After completing his studies at USC, Hii embarked on a successful career as a classical guitarist, performing in concerts and festivals around the world. He has performed in some of the most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He was also awarded the Outstanding Alumnus Award by USC in 2010, in recognition of his achievements as a musician and educator. Today, Hii continues to perform, compose, and teach, inspiring a new generation of guitarists with his passion and dedication to the art of classical music.
