The ensemble is made up of young musicians from across the United States who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The NYSO has become one of the most prestigious youth orchestras in the world, and its members have gone on to successful careers in music. Alexander Schneider was born in Vilna, Lithuania in 1908 and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1913. He began playing the violin at a young age and studied with some of the most prominent musicians of his time, including Adolf Busch and Fritz Kreisler. Schneider was a founding member of the Budapest Quartet and also played with the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1969, Schneider founded the New York String Orchestra as a way to provide young musicians with the opportunity to perform at a high level and to learn from experienced professionals. The ensemble's first concert was held at Carnegie Hall in December of that year, and it was an immediate success. The NYSO has since become a fixture of the classical music scene in New York City and beyond. The NYSO is made up of musicians between the ages of 16 and 23 who are selected through a competitive audition process. The ensemble rehearses intensively for two weeks each December, culminating in a series of concerts at Carnegie Hall and other venues. The NYSO has also toured internationally, performing in Europe, Asia, and South America. Over the years, the NYSO has featured many prominent soloists, including Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Joshua Bell. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and James Levine. One of the highlights of the NYSO's history was its performance at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The ensemble played the national anthems of the participating countries at the opening ceremony, and also gave a concert at the Olympic Village. The NYSO's performance was widely praised, and it helped to raise the profile of the ensemble. The NYSO has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1987, the ensemble received the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts organizations by the United States government. The NYSO has also been awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming multiple times, and has been praised for its commitment to performing new and lesser-known works alongside more familiar repertoire. In addition to its performances, the NYSO has also been involved in educational outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with young musicians in schools and community organizations, providing them with the opportunity to learn from and perform with experienced professionals. The NYSO has also established a scholarship program to support the education and career development of its members. Today, the New York String Orchestra continues to be a leading youth orchestra in the United States and around the world. Its commitment to excellence in performance and education has inspired generations of young musicians, and its legacy is sure to endure for many years to come.More....
