Heiß received his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composers such as Hans-Jürgen von Bose and Wilfried Hiller. Heiß also studied piano and conducting during his time at the conservatory. Heiß's early compositions were heavily influenced by the works of classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. The piece showcases Heiß's technical prowess on the piano and his ability to create complex and intricate melodies. The sonata was well-received by critics and helped establish Heiß as a promising young composer. In 1998, Heiß composed his first orchestral work, "Symphony No. 1."
