Lapa has also composed several orchestral works, including "Sinfonia nº 1" (Symphony No. 1), which was premiered in 1984. The symphony is a tribute to the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa and is divided into three movements, each inspired by one of Pessoa's heteronyms. In addition to his work as a composer, Lapa is also a respected conductor and has led several orchestras in Portugal and abroad.
