Her father was a conductor, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Kleijn was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Kleijn's talent for the cello was evident from an early age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and later at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. During her studies, she won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Concertgebouw Young Talent Award. After completing her studies, Kleijn began her professional career as a cellist.
