Kristian Buhl-Mortensen is a Danish classical pianist and conductor who has made a name for himself in the international music scene. Born on May 22, 1983, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Buhl-Mortensen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a conductor, which greatly influenced his musical development. Buhl-Mortensen received his formal education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied piano with Tove Lønskov and chamber music with Tim Frederiksen. He also studied conducting with Michael Schønwandt and Giordano Bellincampi. During his studies, Buhl-Mortensen won several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize in 2009, which is considered the highest musical honor in Denmark. Buhl-Mortensen made his debut as a soloist with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in 2006, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. Since then, he has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors of our time, such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Valery Gergiev. In addition to his career as a pianist, Buhl-Mortensen is also an accomplished conductor. He has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as the principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra since 2015. Buhl-Mortensen's repertoire is vast and diverse, ranging from the classical masters such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin to contemporary composers such as Ligeti, Adams, and Reich. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Danish composer Carl Nielsen, whose music he has championed throughout his career. One of Buhl-Mortensen's most memorable performances was his debut at the BBC Proms in 2012, where he performed Nielsen's Piano Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis. The performance was widely praised by critics, with The Guardian describing it as "a revelation" and "a triumph of virtuosity and musicality." Buhl-Mortensen has also made several recordings, including a critically acclaimed album of Nielsen's piano music for the Dacapo label. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra was also highly praised, with Gramophone magazine calling it "a performance of great depth and insight." In addition to his performing and recording career, Buhl-Mortensen is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Juilliard School in New York, and has given masterclasses around the world. He is also a frequent guest lecturer and speaker on music and the arts. Buhl-Mortensen's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, he has received the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Prize, the Danish Music Critics' Prize, and the Danish Radio P2 Prize. He was also named a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 2016.
