He was born into a family of musicians, and his father, Joan Lamote de Grignon i Bocquet, was a renowned composer and conductor. Joan Lamote de Grignon began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with his mother, Maria Teresa Bocquet, and later with the famous pianist and composer, Isaac Albéniz. In 1890, Joan Lamote de Grignon moved to Paris to continue his musical studies. He studied composition with Vincent d'Indy and piano with Louis Diémer. During his time in Paris, he became friends with other Spanish composers, including Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo. Joan Lamote de Grignon's music is characterized by its romanticism and its use of traditional Catalan melodies and rhythms. He was deeply influenced by the music of his native Catalonia, and many of his works incorporate elements of Catalan folk music. His music is also notable for its use of rich harmonies and lush orchestration. One of Joan Lamote de Grignon's most famous works is his opera, "El retablo de Maese Pedro" (Master Peter's Puppet Show), which was premiered in 1923.
