The Solem String Quartet is a British classical music ensemble that has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances and recordings. The quartet was founded in 2011 by four graduates of the University of Manchester's music program, and has since become one of the most sought-after string quartets in the world. The founding members of the Solem String Quartet are violinists Amy Tress and William Newell, violist Alistair Vennart, and cellist Stephanie Tress. All four members had previously played together in various chamber music groups, and decided to form the Solem String Quartet after realizing their shared passion for the string quartet repertoire. The quartet's name is derived from the Norwegian word "Solem," which means "sun." The members chose this name to reflect their desire to bring warmth and light to their performances, and to convey the joy and energy they feel when playing together. Since its founding, the Solem String Quartet has performed extensively throughout the UK and internationally, including appearances at major music festivals such as the Cheltenham Music Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the West Cork Chamber Music Festival. The quartet has also collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including pianist Martin Roscoe, clarinetist Michael Collins, and the Carducci Quartet. One of the highlights of the Solem String Quartet's career was their win at the 2014 Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition, which is one of the most prestigious music competitions in the UK. The quartet was awarded the first prize in the string quartet category, as well as the overall prize for the best ensemble in the competition. This win helped to establish the quartet's reputation as one of the most exciting young ensembles in the UK. In addition to their success at the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition, the Solem String Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. Their debut album, "Dvořák: String Quartets Nos. 10 and 13," was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, and was named one of the best classical albums of the year by The Guardian. The quartet's second album, "Britten: String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2," was released in 2019 and also received widespread praise. The Solem String Quartet is known for their dynamic and engaging performances, which showcase their technical skill and musical sensitivity. They are particularly admired for their interpretations of the string quartets of Haydn, Beethoven, and Bartók, as well as their championing of contemporary composers such as Thomas Adès and Joseph Phibbs. In addition to their performances and recordings, the members of the Solem String Quartet are also committed to music education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians through the National Youth String Quartet Academy and the Pro Corda Chamber Music Course, and have also given workshops and masterclasses at schools and universities throughout the UK. Overall, the Solem String Quartet is a remarkable ensemble that has achieved great success in a relatively short amount of time. Their dedication to the string quartet repertoire, their commitment to musical excellence, and their engaging performances have earned them a devoted following and a place among the most exciting young ensembles in the world.
