She was particularly drawn to the spirituals and gospel music of her African American heritage, and began incorporating these influences into her compositions. Powell's first major work was a choral piece called "The Word Was God," which was commissioned by the Alabama Music Teachers Association in 1991. The piece was well-received and helped establish Powell as a rising star in the world of classical music. Powell's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and choirs, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. She has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the 2019 Distinguished Composer Award from the American Choral Directors Association.
