Kölner Streichsextett is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1997 in Cologne, Germany. The group consists of six members who are all accomplished musicians in their own right. The founding members of the ensemble were violinists Verena Wehling and Andreas Krecher, violists Andreas Willwohl and Christiane Hörr, and cellists Matthias Buchholz and Michael Sanderling. The ensemble's main focus is on performing chamber music, particularly works written for string sextet. They have become known for their interpretations of works by composers such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Schoenberg. The group has also commissioned and premiered new works by contemporary composers. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was their performance at the 2004 Salzburg Festival. They were invited to perform Brahms' String Sextet No. 2 in G major, Op. 36, which was met with critical acclaim. The ensemble has also performed at other prestigious venues such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Konzerthaus Vienna. In addition to their live performances, Kölner Streichsextett has also released several recordings. Their debut album, featuring works by Brahms and Schoenberg, was released in 2000 and received positive reviews. They have since released several more albums, including a recording of Tchaikovsky's String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70 "Souvenir de Florence." The ensemble has received several awards and accolades throughout their career. In 2002, they were awarded the German Record Critics' Award for their recording of Brahms' String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 18. They were also awarded the Echo Klassik award in 2005 for their recording of Tchaikovsky's String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70 "Souvenir de Florence." Despite changes in the ensemble's lineup over the years, Kölner Streichsextett has continued to perform and record. They remain one of the most respected and acclaimed chamber music ensembles in Germany and beyond.
