Yosvany Terry is a Cuban-born saxophonist, percussionist, and composer who has made a significant impact on the world of jazz and classical music. Born on October 29, 1970, in Camagüey, Cuba, Terry grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Eladio "Don Pancho" Terry, was a renowned saxophonist and chekeré player, while his mother, Lourdes Terry, was a pianist and music teacher. Terry's grandfather, also named Eladio Terry, was a famous violinist and bandleader in Cuba. Terry began his musical education at a young age, studying classical piano and violin before eventually settling on the saxophone as his primary instrument. He attended the National School of Arts in Havana, where he studied with some of Cuba's most respected musicians, including Carlos Averhoff, Paquito D'Rivera, and Germán Velazco. After graduating from the National School of Arts, Terry went on to study at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana, where he earned a degree in music composition. In 1995, Terry moved to New York City to pursue his career as a jazz musician. He quickly established himself as a sought-after sideman, performing with such luminaries as Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, and Eddie Palmieri. In 2002, Terry released his debut album as a bandleader, "Metamorphosis," which featured his original compositions and arrangements. The album received critical acclaim and established Terry as a rising star in the jazz world. Over the years, Terry has continued to push the boundaries of jazz and classical music, incorporating elements of Cuban folk music, African rhythms, and avant-garde improvisation into his compositions. He has released several more albums as a bandleader, including "Today's Opinion" (2007), "Paseo" (2015), and "New Throned King" (2019), which have all received critical acclaim. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Terry is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at institutions such as the New England Conservatory of Music, the Berklee College of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music, and has conducted workshops and masterclasses around the world. He is also the founder and director of the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, a Grammy-winning ensemble that blends the rhythms and traditions of Latin America with the improvisational spirit of jazz. Throughout his career, Terry has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to music. In 2011, he was named a United States Artists Fellow, one of the highest honors in the arts. He has also been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Program. In conclusion, Yosvany Terry is a highly accomplished musician and composer who has made a significant impact on the world of jazz and classical music. His unique blend of Cuban folk music, African rhythms, and avant-garde improvisation has earned him critical acclaim and a dedicated following of fans and fellow musicians. As an educator, he has inspired countless students to pursue their own musical dreams, and as a performer, he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in music.
