Empire Brass & Friends is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences around the world for over four decades. The group was founded in 1972 by five musicians who were studying at the Boston University School of Music. The original members were Rolf Smedvig, Marc Reese, Michael Seltzer, Scott Hartman, and Sam Pilafian. The ensemble quickly gained popularity for their unique sound, which blended traditional brass instruments with modern arrangements and a touch of jazz. They began performing at local venues in Boston and soon expanded their reach to other cities in the United States. In 1976, they released their first album, "Empire Brass," which received critical acclaim and helped to establish them as one of the premier brass ensembles in the world. Over the years, the lineup of Empire Brass & Friends has changed, with new members joining and others leaving to pursue other opportunities. However, the group has always maintained a high level of musical excellence and has continued to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible with brass instruments. One of the highlights of Empire Brass & Friends' career was their performance at the 1986 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The group was chosen to play the national anthem at the opening ceremony, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. This performance helped to cement their reputation as one of the most talented and versatile brass ensembles in the world. Empire Brass & Friends has also collaborated with many other musicians and artists over the years, including jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, soprano Kathleen Battle, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. These collaborations have resulted in some of the group's most memorable performances and recordings. In addition to their live performances, Empire Brass & Friends has also released numerous albums over the years. Some of their most popular recordings include "Class Brass: On the Edge," "Baroque Music for Brass," and "Empire Brass Christmas." The group has received many awards and accolades over the years, including several Grammy nominations and a Grammy Award for their album "Class Brass: Firedance." They have also been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Despite their many accomplishments, Empire Brass & Friends remains committed to their mission of bringing classical music to audiences around the world. They continue to tour extensively, performing at venues ranging from small churches to large concert halls. Their dedication to their craft and their passion for music has made them one of the most beloved and respected brass ensembles in the world.
