Ursel Schlicht is a German-born pianist, composer, and improviser who has made a name for herself in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in Frankfurt in 1970, Schlicht began playing the piano at a young age and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt, where she received a degree in piano performance. After completing her studies, Schlicht moved to New York City in 1995 to pursue a career in music. She quickly became involved in the city's vibrant experimental music scene, collaborating with a wide range of musicians and composers. In 1998, she founded the Ursel Schlicht Ensemble, a group dedicated to performing her own compositions as well as works by other contemporary composers. Over the years, Schlicht has become known for her innovative approach to the piano, which often involves extended techniques and unconventional playing methods. She has also developed a reputation as a skilled improviser, frequently incorporating improvisation into her performances and recordings. One of Schlicht's most notable performances took place in 2007, when she premiered her composition "The New York Suite" at the Vision Festival in New York City. The piece, which was inspired by the city's diverse neighborhoods and cultures, received critical acclaim and helped to establish Schlicht as a major figure in the contemporary classical music world. In addition to her work as a performer and composer, Schlicht is also an educator. She has taught at a number of institutions, including the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City and the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt. Throughout her career, Schlicht has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 2010, she was awarded a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to support the creation of new works. She has also been a recipient of the prestigious MacDowell Colony Fellowship, which provides artists with the opportunity to work on their craft in a supportive environment. Today, Schlicht continues to perform and compose music, pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new possibilities for the piano and other instruments. Her work has been praised for its originality, creativity, and emotional depth, and she remains a respected and influential figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
