Born on September 13, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the youngest of three children. Her parents were Horace and Edna Mae Carter, and her father worked as a Baptist minister. Nell grew up in poverty and had to work hard to make ends meet. She started singing in church at a young age and quickly developed a love for music. Nell's talent was recognized early on, and she was given the opportunity to attend the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She studied classical music and opera and quickly became one of the school's top performers. After graduating, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In New York, Nell began performing in nightclubs and cabarets. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented singer and was soon discovered by Broadway producers. In 1978, she made her Broadway debut in the musical "Ain't Misbehavin'." The show was a huge success, and Nell's performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. After "Ain't Misbehavin'," Nell continued to work in the theater, appearing in shows like "Annie" and "Dreamgirls." She also began to branch out into television and film. In 1982, she starred in the television series "Gimme a Break!" The show was a hit and ran for six seasons. Nell's performance as the tough but loving housekeeper Nell Harper earned her two Emmy nominations. Throughout her career, Nell continued to perform in concerts and operas. She was known for her powerful voice and her ability to bring emotion to every performance. In 1985, she performed at the White House for President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. She also performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1993, where she paid tribute to her friend and fellow performer, Sammy Davis Jr. Nell's career was not without its challenges. She struggled with addiction and had several run-ins with the law. However, she was able to overcome these obstacles and continued to work in the entertainment industry until her death. Nell passed away on January 23, 2003, at the age of 54. She had suffered from diabetes and heart disease for many years. Her death was a shock to the entertainment industry, and many of her friends and colleagues paid tribute to her talent and her spirit. Nell Carter was a trailblazer in the world of classical music.
