Luminous Voices is a Canadian classical music choir that was founded in 2012 by Timothy Shantz. The choir is based in Calgary, Alberta, and is made up of approximately 30 professional singers who are dedicated to performing a wide range of choral music from different eras and styles. Timothy Shantz, the founder and artistic director of Luminous Voices, was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in a musical family. He began singing in choirs at a young age and went on to study music at the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia. After completing his studies, Shantz worked as a choral conductor and singer in Canada and Europe before returning to Canada to found Luminous Voices. Since its founding, Luminous Voices has become one of Canada's leading choral ensembles, known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. The choir has performed at major festivals and concert series across Canada, including the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's New Music Festival. One of the highlights of Luminous Voices' career was its performance of the world premiere of "The Far West" by Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock in 2015. The piece, which was commissioned by the choir, is a setting of poems by Canadian poet Robert Kroetsch and was described by critics as "hauntingly beautiful" and "a masterpiece of choral writing." In addition to its performances, Luminous Voices has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The choir's debut album, "Sea Dreams," was nominated for a Juno Award in 2016, and its second album, "Mystics & Lovers," was named one of the top classical albums of 2018 by CBC Music. Luminous Voices is also committed to supporting the development of new choral music and has commissioned and premiered works by a number of Canadian composers, including Morlock, Allan Gordon Bell, and Peter-Anthony Togni.
