Vincent Cichowicz was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 5, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Polish immigrants and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Vincent started playing the trumpet at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Cichowicz attended Lane Technical High School in Chicago, where he studied with the legendary trumpet teacher, William Vacchiano. After graduating from high school, he went on to study at the Chicago Musical College, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1950. After completing his studies, Cichowicz began his professional career as a trumpet player with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He played with the orchestra for 27 years, from 1952 to 1979. During his time with the orchestra, he also served as the principal trumpet player for 21 years. Cichowicz was known for his beautiful tone and his ability to play with great sensitivity and expression. He was also a highly respected teacher and mentor to many young trumpet players. He taught at Northwestern University for over 20 years and also taught at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the National Music Camp. One of the highlights of Cichowicz's career was his performance of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1966. The performance was recorded and released on the RCA Victor label, and it remains a classic recording of the piece to this day. Cichowicz was also the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1979, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the International Trumpet Guild, and in 1985, he was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award by the National Association of Schools of Music. In addition to his work as a performer and teacher, Cichowicz was also a prolific writer and researcher. He wrote several books on trumpet playing, including "Trumpet Flow Studies," "Long Tone Studies," and "The Art of Brass Playing." He also conducted extensive research on the history of trumpet playing and the development of the instrument. Cichowicz passed away on May 23, 1984, at the age of 57. His legacy lives on through his recordings, his writings, and the many students he taught and mentored throughout his career. He was a true master of the trumpet and a beloved figure in the world of classical music.
