David Charles Abell is a renowned conductor, arranger, and orchestrator in the world of classical music. Born on August 22, 1958, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Abell grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Abell started playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the trumpet and French horn. Abell attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. He then went on to study conducting at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Master of Music degree. Abell's career in classical music began in the 1980s when he worked as a rehearsal pianist for the New York City Opera. He later became the company's assistant conductor and worked on productions of operas such as "La Bohème," "Carmen," and "The Marriage of Figaro." In 1991, Abell made his debut as a conductor with the New York City Opera, leading a production of "The Merry Widow." He went on to conduct many other productions for the company, including "The Magic Flute," "Don Giovanni," and "The Barber of Seville." Abell's talent as an orchestrator and arranger also became well-known in the classical music world. He has worked on many Broadway productions, including "Les Misérables," "Miss Saigon," and "The Phantom of the Opera." He has also arranged music for artists such as Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, and Michael Crawford. In addition to his work in opera and musical theater, Abell has conducted many orchestras around the world. He has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, among others. One of Abell's most notable performances was his conducting of the 25th anniversary concert of "Les Misérables" at the O2 Arena in London in 2010. The concert featured a cast of over 300 performers, including many of the original cast members from the show's premiere in 1985. The concert was broadcast live in cinemas around the world and later released on DVD and Blu-ray. Abell has also received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 2008, he was awarded the Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for his work on the Broadway production of "Avenue Q." He has also been nominated for several other Tony Awards, including Best Orchestrations for "Putting It Together" and Best Musical for "The Woman in White." Abell has also been recognized for his work in opera. In 2003, he received the Richard Rodgers Award for his contributions to the American musical theater. He has also been awarded the ASCAP Award for his work as a composer and arranger. In addition to his work as a conductor and arranger, Abell is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He has also conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world.
