He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father taught him to play the piano, and he showed a natural talent for music from a young age. Davidson began his musical career as a pianist, playing in local concerts and competitions. He won several prizes and scholarships, which allowed him to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music. There, he studied piano with Frederic Lamond and composition with Charles Wood. After completing his studies, Davidson began working as a pianist and conductor in London. He played in many concerts and recitals, and he also worked as a conductor for various orchestras and choirs. In 1924, he became the conductor of the Palm Court Orchestra at the Hotel Cecil in London, which was a popular venue for dance music at the time. Davidson's work with the Palm Court Orchestra made him a household name in Britain. He became known for his elegant and refined style of conducting, which was perfectly suited to the music of the era. He also composed many pieces of music for the orchestra, which were often played on the radio and in dance halls across the country. In addition to his work with the Palm Court Orchestra, Davidson also conducted the BBC Dance Orchestra and the BBC Theatre Orchestra.
