She was raised in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Troon showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Troon's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of seven. Pires quickly recognized Troon's potential and became her mentor and guide throughout her musical journey. Troon's talent continued to grow, and she began performing in public at the age of ten. She made her debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of twelve, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major. The performance was a huge success, and Troon received critical acclaim for her virtuosity and musicality. Troon continued to perform and study under Pires, and at the age of sixteen, she won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. The win catapulted Troon to international fame, and she began performing in major concert halls around the world. Troon's repertoire was vast, and she was known for her interpretations of classical and romantic composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann. She was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as György Ligeti and Arvo Pärt. Troon's performances were always highly anticipated, and she was known for her intense and emotional playing style. Her performances were often described as transcendent, with audiences being moved to tears by her playing. Troon's career was not without its challenges, however. In 1995, she suffered a severe injury to her right hand, which threatened to end her career. Troon underwent extensive rehabilitation and was able to return to performing after several years of recovery. Despite the setback, Troon continued to perform and record throughout her career. She released several critically acclaimed recordings, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Troon was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2001 for her services to music, and in 2010, she was awarded the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize for her contributions to the arts. Tragically, Troon's career was cut short when she passed away in 2015 at the age of 50.
