David Baerwald is an American composer, singer, and songwriter who was born on July 11, 1960, in Oxford, Ohio. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Baerwald started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and drums. Baerwald attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he studied music composition and theory. While at UCLA, he met fellow musician David Ricketts, and the two formed the band David & David in the mid-1980s. The band released their debut album, "Boomtown," in 1986, which was a critical and commercial success. The album featured the hit single "Welcome to the Boomtown," which reached number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After the success of "Boomtown," Baerwald and Ricketts went their separate ways, and Baerwald began a solo career. He released his debut solo album, "Bedtime Stories," in 1990, which was well-received by critics. The album featured the single "The Got No Shotgun Hydrahead Octopus Blues," which was later covered by the band Phish. Baerwald's second solo album, "Triage," was released in 1992 and featured the single "A Secret Silken World." The album was produced by T-Bone Burnett and featured guest appearances by musicians such as Elvis Costello and Peter Case. In addition to his solo work, Baerwald has also composed music for film and television. He co-wrote the song "Come What May" for the 2001 film "Moulin Rouge!" with composer Angelo Badalamenti. The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Baerwald has also composed music for television shows such as "Northern Exposure," "Party of Five," and "Gilmore Girls." He received an Emmy nomination for his work on the theme song for the television series "Huff." Baerwald's music is known for its eclectic mix of styles, including rock, folk, and classical music. He often incorporates unusual instruments into his compositions, such as the accordion and the mandolin. In addition to his music career, Baerwald is also a visual artist and has exhibited his paintings and sculptures in galleries across the United States. Overall, David Baerwald is a talented and versatile composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. His unique style and innovative approach to composition have earned him a dedicated following and critical acclaim.
