Charles Nelson Reilly was an American actor, comedian, director, and drama teacher, who was born on January 13, 1931, in The Bronx, New York City. He was the son of Charles Joseph Reilly and Signe Elvera Nelson, both of whom were of Irish and Swedish descent. Reilly grew up in the Bronx and attended the Bronx High School of Science. He later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Reilly began his career in the theater, appearing in numerous Broadway productions throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He made his Broadway debut in 1955 in the play "The Rainmaker" and went on to appear in such productions as "Bye Bye Birdie," "Hello, Dolly!," and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." In 1962, he received a Tony Award nomination for his performance in the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." In addition to his work on Broadway, Reilly also appeared in numerous television shows and films throughout his career. He made his television debut in 1956 on the show "The Edge of Night" and went on to appear in such shows as "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," "The Love Boat," and "The Drew Carey Show." He also appeared in films such as "Cannonball Run II" and "All Dogs Go to Heaven." Reilly was perhaps best known for his work as a game show panelist, appearing on such shows as "Match Game" and "The Hollywood Squares." He was known for his quick wit and humorous responses, and his appearances on these shows helped to make him a household name. In addition to his work as an actor, Reilly was also a director and drama teacher. He directed numerous productions throughout his career, including the Broadway production of "The Belle of Amherst" starring Julie Harris. He also taught drama at HB Studio in New York City and at the University of California, Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Reilly received numerous awards and accolades for his work. In addition to his Tony Award nomination, he also received an Emmy Award for his work on the television show "The Life and Times of Captain Kangaroo." He was also inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2002. Reilly passed away on May 25, 2007, at the age of 76. He was remembered by his colleagues and fans as a talented and humorous performer who brought joy and laughter to audiences throughout his career.
