Role:Composer PerformerAngelica Negron is a Puerto Rican-born composer, performer, and multi-instrumentalist who has made a name for herself in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in San Juan in 1981, Negron grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. She later learned to play the guitar, bass, and drums, and began writing her own songs and compositions. Negron studied music at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and later earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She went on to earn a Master of Music degree from New York University, where she studied with composers Julia Wolfe and Missy Mazzoli. Negron's music is characterized by its eclectic blend of styles and influences, ranging from classical and experimental music to pop, rock, and electronic music. Her compositions often incorporate elements of improvisation, found sounds, and multimedia, and she frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines, such as visual artists, dancers, and filmmakers. One of Negron's most notable works is her multimedia opera "La Isla Mágica," which premiered in 2017 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The opera tells the story of a young girl who discovers a magical island and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. The score incorporates a variety of instruments, including strings, percussion, and electronics, and the production features video projections and live performers. Another notable work by Negron is her piece "Drawings for Meyoko," which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and premiered in 2015. The piece is inspired by the drawings of Japanese artist Meyoko and features a blend of acoustic and electronic sounds, as well as recorded sounds of birds and insects. Negron has also composed works for a variety of other ensembles and performers, including the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the American Composers Orchestra, and the Albany Symphony Orchestra. Her music has been performed at venues and festivals around the world, including the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh International Festival. In addition to her work as a composer, Negron is also an active performer and collaborator. She has performed with a variety of ensembles and artists, including the electronic duo Balún, the experimental rock band Zs, and the composer and performer M. Lamar. Negron has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts, a fellowship from the Sundance Institute, and a residency at the MacDowell Colony. She has also been recognized for her work as an educator and mentor, and has taught at institutions such as the New York Philharmonic's Very Young Composers program and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy. Overall, Angelica Negron is a versatile and innovative composer who has made a significant contribution to the world of contemporary classical music. Her eclectic blend of styles and influences, as well as her willingness to collaborate with artists from other disciplines, has helped to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music and has earned her a reputation as one of the most exciting and original voices in the field today.More....
