He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist. Tomasow began playing the violin at a young age and showed exceptional talent from the start. Tomasow's family moved to the United States when he was a child, and he continued his musical education there. He studied at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was a student of Ivan Galamian. Tomasow's talent was quickly recognized, and he won several awards and competitions during his time at Juilliard. After completing his studies, Tomasow began his professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented violinists of his generation. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Tomasow was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered many new works by composers such as Elliott Carter and Krzysztof Penderecki. Throughout his career, Tomasow received numerous awards and honors. He was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton in 1997. One of the highlights of Tomasow's career was his performance of the complete cycle of Bach's solo violin works at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. This was a monumental achievement, as the cycle had never been performed in its entirety in the United States before. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Tomasow's reputation as one of the greatest interpreters of Bach's music. Tomasow was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, and his students included many successful violinists, such as Cho-Liang Lin and Gil Shaham. Sadly, Tomasow passed away on December 1, 2014, at the age of 78. However, his legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and taught.
