He was the son of a wealthy businessman who was also a music lover. Tanaka's father encouraged him to pursue music from a young age, and he began studying the piano at the age of six. Tanaka's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a skilled pianist. He also showed an interest in composition, and began writing his own music while still in his teens. In 1930, he entered the Tokyo Music School (now the Tokyo University of the Arts), where he studied composition under the renowned composer Tomojiro Ikenouchi. During his time at the Tokyo Music School, Tanaka was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and traditions. He was particularly interested in Western classical music, and was heavily influenced by the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. He also studied traditional Japanese music, and incorporated elements of this music into his own compositions. After graduating from the Tokyo Music School in 1934, Tanaka began working as a composer and arranger for various radio stations and music publishers. He also continued to compose his own music, and his works began to gain recognition both in Japan and abroad. One of Tanaka's most famous works is his "Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra," which he composed in 1951. The concerto is known for its virtuosic trumpet solos and its use of traditional Japanese scales and rhythms. It has been performed by some of the world's leading trumpet players, including Maurice André and Håkan Hardenberger. Another notable work by Tanaka is his "Symphony No. 2," which he composed in 1961. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that reflects Tanaka's deep love for his country and its culture. It has been performed by orchestras around the world, and is considered one of Tanaka's most important works. Throughout his career, Tanaka remained committed to exploring new musical ideas and pushing the boundaries of traditional classical music.
